The table compares the number of employees and factories involved in silk production in England and Wales between 1851 and 1901. Overall, while the number of male and female employees working in the silk industry declined considerably, the number of silk-producing factories rose markedly during the same period. It is also notable that women consistently outnumbered men throughout the entire timeframe.
In 1851, the number of male employees stood at 53,964, representing the highest figure recorded for men. This number then declined steadily to 25,766 in 1881, followed by a slight rebound to 28,689 in 1891, before dropping sharply to reach its lowest point of 13,375 in 1901.
Similarly, the number of female workers showed a continuous downward trend. Beginning at 76,786 in 1851—the peak for female employment—it fell progressively to reach 25,567 by 1901. Despite this decline, women remained the majority in every recorded year, with their number still nearly double that of men by the end of the period.
As for total employment in the silk industry, the figure started at a substantial 130,750 in 1851. Thereafter, it plummeted to just 38,942 in 1901, marking a nearly threefold reduction in the workforce over the fifty-year span.
In contrast, the number of factories engaged in silk production displayed an upward trajectory overall. Starting at 272 in 1851, the figure soared to its peak of 761 in 1861 prior to falling modestly to 693 ten years later. It then rose slightly to 702 in 1881 and declined again to 623 by 1901—still well above the initial figure.
