Isaac Newton
Isaac Newton was born in Lincolnshire, England in 1643, where he grew up on a farm. When he was a boy, he made lots of brilliant inventions like a windmill to grind corn, a water clock and a sundial. However, Isaac didn’t get brilliant marks at school.
When he was 18, Isaac went to study at Cambridge University. He was very interested in physics, mathematics and astronomy. But in 1665 the Great Plague, which was a terrible disease, spread in England, and Cambridge University had to close down. Isaac returned home to the farm.
Isaac continued studying and experimenting at home. One day he was drinking a cup of tea in the garden. He saw an apple fall from a tree.
‘Why do apples fall down instead of up?’
From this, he formed the theory of gravity. Gravity is an invisible force which pulls objects towards the Earth and keeps the planets moving around the Sun.
Isaac was fascinated by light. He discovered that white light is in fact made up of all the colours of the rainbow. Isaac also invented a special reflecting telescope, using mirrors. It was much more powerful than other telescopes.
Isaac made another very important discovery, which he called his ‘Three Laws of Motion’. These laws explain how objects move. Isaac’s laws are still used today for sending rockets into space.
Thanks to his discoveries, Isaac became rich and famous. However, he had a bad temper and often argued with other scientists.

Sir Isaac Newton died in 1727 aged 85. He was buried along with English kings and queens in Westminster Abbey in London. He was one of the greatest scientists and mathematicians who has ever lived.

RAGISTAN SQUARE
Registan is often called the heart of Samarkand. It is one of the greatest and most magnificent works of the Islamic world.
Registan means ”a sandy place” and it was called like this because a long time ago there used to be a stream that washed sand over the earth. Now it is a big arena which is used as a stage for many permomances on traditional Uzbek holidays.
Ulug Bek Madrassah, one of the three on the Registan square, used to be a school and hosted at least 100 students who studied Islam and sciences. Only the boys from rich families were accepted there. The Madrassah was built by Ulugbek's
order and his guidance and when it was constructed Ulugbek himself gave lectures on mathemetics and astronomy there till his death. Now it is a museum and all the visitors are welcome to the place. Two years later the second Sher-Dor Madrassah was built. The main structure was the same as in Ulugbek Madrassah. This one used to be a school as well but it had a bigger teaching space. Now, there are many tiny antique shops in the inside yard and you can buy traditional Uzbek souvenirs there. Several years later the third Tilla-Kari Madrassah was built. In those days, the main entrance used to be screened with lattice and two other entrances were used for access. Tiila-Kari Madrassah was used mostly as a mosque. People used to come and pray there. Now, all the doors are functioning and people are welcome to the museum to enjoy the beaty of ages that are gone.

Lily: And there are so many different varieties, too. No matter what, you can always find something that suits you, right?
Greta: That’s true. I wonder if that’s where the saying “It’s not my cup of tea” comes from. So, my favorite black tea is orange spice, and I also really like Lady Grey.
Lily: Lady Grey is good. I like chai a lot.
Greta: I also love the herbal teas, especially in the evening. I’m a big fan of Lemon Zinger, and peppermint is kind of my go-to, I-don’t-feel-good tea.
Lily: And chamomile is good if you want to get to sleep.
Greta: Yeah.
