Tourism is increasing in many far-to-reach places around the world.
Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of this trend?
Over the past few years, tourism has become so prevalent that it is reaching remote areas that had previously been considered hard to reach. Much as it has some inevitable side effects such as environmental pollution, its benefits are generally superior to the drawbacks as it creates job opportunities.
One undeniable harm that the tourism industry brings to far-off locations is the fact that it adversely affects the environment. When travelers reach distant areas, they usually create a mess by, for example, throwing away litter, which disturbs the native animal species by ruining their habitats. Plus, as adventurers flock to newly discovered areas, there will be a need to construct new tourist facilities and hotels for the visitors, which comes at the cost of cutting down trees or changing the original landscape of the area. Those two outcomes combined can add up to alarming problems like pollution and global warming, just like the case in Bali: the natural landscapes and resources are so damaged that it seems hard to mitigate pollution now.
Despite the possible cons, remote tourism development triggers a boost in a specific country’s economy. Tourism areas get crowded, subsequently opening up more job opportunities and encouraging the locals to generate business, which is why it is seen as a major contributor that makes local businesses thrive. When nature enthusiasts pay a visit to such excursions, they usually show interest in the local culture as well as their traditional food, enriching their knowledge about cultures and traditions. With more attention and interest grabbed, more restaurants and shops can operate without worrying about the shortage of clients, thereby contributing not only to the citizens but also to the government through income taxes. Samarkand’s mountainous areas can be a good example of this phenomenon, where most of the local residents take advantage of the visitors by running small businesses while at the same time giving tourists a one-of-a-kind experience with the best services.
In conclusion, the fact that the number of visits to far-off places is increasing is due to tourism, resulting in both positive and negative outcomes. However, I personally believe that there are more pros than cons, taking the financial and cultural benefits into account.
