Many local languages today are dying out due to the rise of predominant languages like English.
Is this a positive or negative development?
These days, many minor languages are disappearing because of the popularity of global ones including English. While living in a global village with the same language helps overcome a language barrier, I believe that it is likely to result in many cultures and national identities being lost.
One of the primary benefits of speaking only major languages is that it fosters global communication. Being able to speak one or two dominant languages means an easy interaction with those living in other parts of the world. While travelling, most people find it difficult to fully expose themselves to the lifestyle of locals due to their inability to hold a conversation in a local language. However, English or Spanish language acquisition, for example, enables tourists to converse meaningfully, enjoying their trip to other countries. Similarly, such effective communication can also lead to successful business negotiations provided business partners speak the same language without the need of using translation apps that sometimes fail to deliver the subtle differences in languages.
I, however, consider this development to be cause for concern. Since languages have evolved significantly along with cultures and traditions of nations, they represent peoples’ lifestyles, hopes, as well as history. With the arrival of dominant languages, these vital aspects of evolution can be replaced by alien customs. The impact of this trend is evident in the example of Iceland where youngsters prefer to communicate in English rather than their native language. The list of countries like Iceland is growing, slowly losing their traditional values including their mother tongue.
Equally concerning is the disappearance of national identity. Learning dominant languages, people, particularly the youth acquire not only the language itself but also the mentality, clothing styles and even manners of those individuals speaking that language. As a result, attempting to imitate those, young people gradually forget their own identity. In my country, Uzbekistan for example, the youth incorporate foreign words, usually Russian and now even English words into their speech to get the message across, adversely impacting their attitude towards their native language. That is because it is becoming trendy to use such expressions during the conversation.
In conclusion, although learning predominant languages encourages cross-cultural communication and business, the drawbacks including the loss of local cultures and identity are greater. Therefore, I view this development negatively.
