Urban heat islands describe the tendency of cities to record higher temperatures than surrounding rural areas. Concrete, asphalt, and dense building materials absorb and retain heat more efficiently than soil or vegetation. Limited airflow and reduced tree cover intensify this effect, especially during summer nights.
The consequences are measurable. Higher urban temperatures increase energy demand for cooling, worsen air quality, and raise health risks for vulnerable populations. Studies show temperature differences of up to five degrees Celsius between urban centers and nearby countryside.
Urban planners now address this issue through reflective surfaces, green roofs, and expanded tree coverage. The phenomenon demonstrates how human design choices can unintentionally reshape local climate conditions.
