Some people argue that students should have complete freedom to select every subject they study at school rather than follow a structured curriculum. While this idea may appear attractive because it promotes independence, I strongly disagree with it. This is because a fixed curriculum ensures that young learners acquire essential foundational knowledge, and it also prevents them from making short-sighted decisions about their education.
Body Paragraph 1
The first reason I disagree is that a structured curriculum guarantees that students gain fundamental knowledge in a wide range of disciplines. School education is designed not only to develop personal interests but also to equip learners with basic competencies such as literacy, numeracy, and scientific understanding. If students were allowed to choose all their subjects freely, some might avoid challenging but crucial fields like mathematics or science simply because they seem difficult. As a result, these students could graduate with serious gaps in their knowledge. Such deficiencies might limit their future opportunities, particularly in higher education and the job market. Therefore, compulsory core subjects ensure that every student receives a balanced and comprehensive education.

Another important reason is that young students often lack the maturity and foresight required to make wise academic decisions. At a young age, many learners choose subjects based on temporary interests, peer influence, or perceived ease rather than long-term benefits. Later in life, this decision could restrict their career prospects. A carefully designed curriculum, however, protects students from such impulsive choices and guides them toward a more well-rounded intellectual development.
Conclusion
In conclusion, although allowing students to choose all their subjects may seem empowering, it is not a practical approach to education. A fixed curriculum is essential because it provides fundamental knowledge and prevents immature academic decisions that could harm students’ future prospects.
