Nigeria's ongoing electricity crisis is set to intensify in the coming weeks. Gas suppliers have begun halting supplies to thermal power plants due to an estimated ₦3.3 trillion debt owed by power generation companies (GenCos). This move threatens to exacerbate the country's widespread power shortages.
Dr. Joy Ogaji, Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC), revealed this during a recent interview on Fresh FM. She warned that the escalating debts throughout the power sector value chain are driving the industry toward a severe crisis.
According to Ogaji, around 70% of the amounts owed to gas-fired power plants ultimately go to gas suppliers. This means gas companies are owed roughly ₦3.3 trillion out of the approximately ₦4.76 trillion linked to thermal power generation. She added that gas suppliers have explicitly notified GenCos that they will cease providing gas until outstanding payments are settled.
This development comes amid broader challenges in Nigeria's power sector, including chronic liquidity issues, underpayment for generated capacity, and persistent gas supply constraints that have already limited national generation levels.
