Iran Threatens to Withdraw from 2026 World Cup After US Strikes
Iran has warned it may boycott the 2026 FIFA World Cup following deadly US airstrikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, triggering a sharp military escalation across the Middle East.
The joint US–Israeli operation targeted major Iranian cities, including Tehran, prompting Iran to retaliate with missile attacks on neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar. British jets were deployed to protect allied nations, meaning five World Cup participants became directly involved in the conflict.
Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj said the country’s participation is now in serious doubt, stating it would be difficult to focus on football under current circumstances. Iran is scheduled to face New Zealand, Belgium, and Egypt in the group stage, with their opening match set for June 16.

Guardiola: Man City Have Learned Key Lessons from Real Madrid Battles
Pep Guardiola says Manchester City have grown stronger after repeated Champions League clashes with Real Madrid, as the two sides prepare to meet again in the last 16.
City and Real have faced each other 15 times in Europe, with the Spanish giants eliminating Guardiola’s team in each of the past two seasons. Despite that, Guardiola believes the rivalry has helped sharpen City’s mentality and ambition.
The City boss also confirmed that Muslim players Abdukodir Khusanov, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Rayan Cherki and Omar Marmoush will be available during Ramadan, stressing that nutrition and recovery plans are carefully adapted.
Meanwhile, City remain in the Premier League title race, trailing Arsenal by five points but holding a game in hand and hosting the Gunners in April.

Eric Chelle: “I’m Still Super Eagles Coach” Amid Marseille Rumours
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has dismissed speculation linking him with a move to Olympique de Marseille, insisting he remains fully committed to Nigeria and still has one year left on his contract.
Chelle confirmed ongoing contract talks with the Nigeria Football Federation but questioned how details of his proposal, including a reported salary request, were leaked to the media. He clarified the figure was in dollars, not euros, and included wages for his entire technical staff.
The Malian coach also denied any contact with Marseille, stressing that his focus remains on Nigeria’s upcoming international fixtures. Since his appointment, Chelle has guided the Super Eagles to Unity Cup success and a third-place finish at the 2025 AFCON.

Senegal Condemns Jailing of Fans in Morocco After AFCON Final
Senegal has strongly criticized Morocco after 18 Senegalese football fans were sentenced to prison following a pitch invasion during the Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat.
The supporters received jail terms ranging from three months to one year, along with fines, after being convicted of violence against security forces and property damage.
Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said the punishment went beyond sport and harmed relations between two friendly nations, adding that Senegal could activate a bilateral agreement to transfer the convicts home if necessary.

Arbeloa Urges UEFA to Turn Anti-Racism Into Real Action
Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has called on UEFA to go beyond slogans and take decisive action in the fight against racism following the alleged abuse of Vinicius Junior during last week’s Champions League clash with Benfica.
UEFA provisionally suspended Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni for the second leg after Vinicius accused him of racial abuse. If found guilty, Prestianni could face a minimum 10-match ban.
“We have a great opportunity to mark a turning point in the fight against racism,” Arbeloa said. “UEFA can make this more than just a slogan or a banner before matches.”
Arbeloa added that Vinicius would respond with character and strength on the pitch, predicting a strong performance in the decisive return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu.

UEFA Suspends Prestianni for Real Madrid Second Leg After Racism Probe
UEFA has provisionally suspended Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni for the second leg of their Champions League knockout tie against Real Madrid, following an investigation into alleged discriminatory behaviour involving Vinicius Junior.
The decision comes after UEFA appointed an Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector to examine the incident that occurred during the first-leg clash on February 17, 2026. Based on the interim report, UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body imposed a one-match provisional ban for a prima facie breach of Article 14 of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations.
As a result, Prestianni will miss Wednesday’s return leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, while the investigation continues.
