(PART1) TOPIC: HOMETOWN
1) Please describe your hometown a little.
I come from Shakhrisabz, a city in the southern part of Uzbekistan. It’s
a place rich in tradition and history
, known for its
beautiful old city center
and
vibrant culture.
2) What is your town well-known for?
Shakhrisabz is famous for its
extraordinary historical monuments,
including the Ak-Saray Palace and the Dorut Tilovat complex, which date back centuries.
3)Do you like your hometown?
Yes, I really love my hometown. It
gives me a sense of belonging
—I feel connected to its traditions, and I’m inspired by its
natural beauty
every day.
4.Is that a big city or a small place?
I would say it’s
a medium-sized city.
It’s not as crowded as Tashkent, but it still has a
thriving community
and plenty of services.
5)Do you think you will continue living there for a long time?
Honestly, I don’t think I’ll stay forever. I plan to move to Tashkent in the near future for work, and after that, I hope to
pursue my master’s degree in Europe.
6)What is the difference between living in the countryside and the city?
There are significant differences: the countryside is
incredibly peaceful
, perfect for slowing down and enjoying nature, whereas the city is
vibrant, full of energy
, and offers
countless career and social opportunities.
7)How has your town changed over the last 20 years?
My hometown has transformed dramatically; it used to be
a small town with narrow streets
, but now it’s blossomed into a modern city with wide roads and
high-rise buildings.
8)What do you like most about the area where you live?
I really enjoy living in Tashkent, especially in my neighborhood. It’s safe, calm, and everything—shops, schools, and parks—is
within easy reach.
9)Are there any problems in your hometown?
Yes, there are a few issues. In the summer, it gets very crowded due to tourism, and in winter, we sometimes
face power outages
or
water shortages,
which can be challenging.
10)Would you recommend your hometown to tourists?
Absolutely! I would highly recommend Shakhrisabz to tourists. They’ll be amazed by the
historical sites
and
the charm of the town
, and it’s a fantastic place to learn about Uzbek culture.

Cyclists and car drivers sharing the same road might cause some problems.
What are the problems?
What could be done to solve those problems?
In many countries, it is common for cyclists to share the road with drivers. This undoubtedly leads to two prevalent problems: increased risk of collisions and heavier traffic congestion. However, introducing separate bike lanes could address these challenges.
The occurrence of accidents is much higher when cyclists and drivers share the same road. The primary reason for this is the difference in speed between bicycles and motorized vehicles. This speed variation makes overtaking more dangerous, leading to an increased likelihood of accidents.
Additionally, allowing both cyclists and drivers to use the same road contributes to traffic congestion. Since bicycles travel at lower speeds, they hinder the smooth flow of traffic. Kuala Lumpur is a good example of this issue. Due to the lack of dedicated bike lanes, traffic moves extremely slowly, making the city one of the top five in the world for traffic jams.
However, developing dedicated bike lanes could significantly reduce the number of collisions, as vehicles traveling at similar speeds make overtaking much safer. For example, Amsterdam, the world's most bike-friendly city, has greatly minimized accidents between bicycles and cars by having special lanes for bikes on all roads.
Apart from this, the introduction of bike lanes can also alleviate traffic congestion. When there is a designated space for cyclists, drivers do not have to adjust to the slower speed of bicycles, resulting in a smoother flow of traffic. Cities that have introduced dedicated bike lanes do not experience this problem, as cyclists can travel at their own pace without disrupting other vehicles.
In conclusion, cyclists and drivers sharing the same road leads to several problems, including a higher risk of accidents and heavier traffic congestion. Allocating exclusive bike lanes could be a feasible solution to these issues.

The line graph illustrates the proportion of members participating in three different activities at a UK sports club between 1995 and 2015.
Overall, participation in gym activities increased significantly over the period, while swimming experienced a marked decline. Meanwhile, team sports fluctuated but ultimately became the most popular activity.
In 1995, swimming was by far the most popular activity, with approximately 50% of members taking part. However, this figure fell steadily over the following years, dropping to around 15% by 2010, after which it remained stable until 2015.
In contrast, participation in team sports stood at 32% in 1995. This proportion rose gradually, peaking at 40% in 2010 before declining slightly to its initial level by the end of the period. Notably, team sports overtook swimming in 2005 to become the most widely played activity.
Gym participation, although minimal at just 5% in 1995, increased sharply between 2000 and 2010. It then levelled off at approximately 27% during the final five years.

(PART1) TOPIC 1: WORK&STUDY
1️⃣
Do you work or are you a student?
I work as an English teacher at
a private learning centre
, and I’ve been there for about six years now. Over that time, I’ve
gained a lot of experience
and, honestly, I’ve grown a lot as a person too.
2️⃣
What work do you do?
I teach General English as well as IELTS preparation classes. I enjoy both, but I’d say
I’m more interested in
teaching IELTS because it involves more strategy and
critical thinking,
not just explaining grammar rules.
3️⃣
Why did you choose that job?
To be honest
, teaching wasn’t my first choice. When I was a child, I actually wanted to become a pilot. However, both of my parents are teachers, and they encouraged me to choose this path. At first, it felt more like
a practical decision
, but over time I genuinely started enjoying it.
4️⃣
Do you like your job?
Yes, I do.
What I love most is
seeing my students succeed. When they
achieve their target scores
or become more confident, it
gives me a real sense of satisfaction
. I also enjoy meeting different kinds of people every day, which helps me
improve my communication skills.
5️⃣
Is there anything you dislike about your job?
Well, like any job, it has its challenges. Sometimes it can be tiring when students don’t understand something even after several explanations. Exam periods can also be stressful because I tend
to work extra hours
to support them. But overall, I see these difficulties as part of the job.
6️⃣
What was your dream job when you were young?
When I was younger, I wanted to be a pilot.
I was fascinated b
y flying and traveling around the world. I used to watch movies about aviation, and the whole idea of adventure really attracted me.
7️⃣
Have you ever changed your opinion about your dream job?
Yes, I did. As I got older, I realized that becoming a pilot in Uzbekistan would be quite difficult because there aren’t many training opportunities. It’s also
a very demanding and high-responsibility job
. So eventually, I decided to rethink my plans.
8️⃣
What skills are most important for your job?
I think communication skills are the most important. A teacher needs to explain ideas clearly and adjust explanations depending on the student.
A sense of humour
also helps a lot because it keeps students engaged. And of course,
being punctual and professional
is important since teachers are role models.
9️⃣
What is the most challenging part of your daily routine?
For me, the hardest part is maintaining balance. During exam seasons, I often work late preparing materials or helping students, so waking up early the next day can be difficult. Sometimes
I feel quite tired,
but I try to
manage my time
better to avoid burnout.
🔟
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years, I see myself still teaching IELTS but hopefully at a higher level. At the same time,
I’m really interested in
travelling, so I’d love to start a YouTube channel about travel. Ideally, I’d like to combine education and travel and create useful content
for a wider audience.

The bar chart compares the percentage of government expenditure allocated to roads and transport in four countries between 1990 and 2005.
Overall, Italy and Portugal saw a decline in their spending over the period, whereas the figures for the UK and the USA fluctuated. Portugal consistently allocated the highest proportion of its budget to roads and transport in each year shown.
In 1990, just over a quarter of the Portuguese government’s budget was devoted to roads and transport, while Italy spent around 19%, approximately seven percentage points less. Over the next 15 years, Portugal’s expenditure fell steadily to roughly 15% by 2005. Similarly, Italy experienced a gradual decline, with its proportion dropping from 19% in 1990 to about 14% in 2005.
In contrast, spending in the USA remained relatively stable, fluctuating around 13% throughout the period. The UK’s figure showed greater variation. Starting at around 10% in 1990, spending on roads in this country increased to nearly 15% but fell to about 6% in 1995 before recovering to approximately 9% in 2005.
