Some people believe that homework is unnecessary, while others think it is essential for students’ learning.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Some people hold the view that assigning extra tasks for students is not necessary, while others argue that it is an important educational tool to achieve measurable academic outcomes. Personally, I am more inclined towards the second perspective.
A main drawback of giving homework is that it places extra pressure on students. Since they are already overwhelmed with daily lessons and exam reviews, forcing them to complete tasks at home may discourage students from studying further. Assigning homework may also lead to a sedentary lifestyle. Since students need to complete homework, they are not able to allocate time for outdoor activities. This passive lifestyle may create severe health problems in the long term. For instance, many teenagers today spend most of their evenings sitting at a desk completing assignments instead of engaging in physical exercise or outdoor recreation, which negatively affects their overall health.
However, I agree with those who believe that homework does play a pivotal role in achieving academic success. A main advantage of doing homework is better long-term retention. When students review and repeat lessons at home, it helps them consolidate the knowledge they have gained at school. This paves the way for better academic performance. Doing homework enables students to learn essential skills such as time management and self-discipline. Since employees with these skills are highly valued in the job market, students should be encouraged to do homework.
To conclude, although there are valid arguments supporting the idea of not giving homework, I firmly believe that homework is an indispensable part of academic success. Therefore, it should remain a compulsory task for students.
